In the early stages of a software development project, activities aimed at defect prevention, or at a minimum the earliest possible defect discovery, are conducted since defects prevented do not cost the organization later on, and defects discovered early in the SDLC will cost dramatically less to repair than those found later.
As software development proceeds, QA activity shifts from prevention to planning for, and executing testing aimed at, discovering software problems before they reach the customer/user. These activities include manual and automated testing of software functionality, as well as performance/load/stress testing. During these activities, many test assets (e.g., test cases, test scripts) are produced and managed, all of which can be reused for subsequent builds/releases of the software application.
Throughout all of the prevention and detection activities, robust reporting of software quality metrics is an absolute necessity and feeds high-quality, fact-based decision-making at each critical point in the SDLC.
